Some may have noted that this blog origionates in Japan and therefore may wonder if I have any information or photos in reference to events that have taken place -- and continue to take place -- here. No...What can be said or shown at this point.

I and my family are in a safe part of Japan that has not been directly affected by events. What other have experienced, and continue to experience, is absolutely tragic (it goes without saying).

I certainly can't speak for the people of Japan but I know that they are greatful for the support and concern shown by many.

I hope many more will contribute what they can to assist and that problems are resolved as quickley as possible.

May others be spared such tragedy...

This is one of my favorite examples of German Romantic Landscape painting. The actual painting was destroyed in WWII but this photo of the painting remains. I've written a poem below in homage to the spirit it conjures:

...The cathedral's remains project their heavy weight outward into the air.

Lying beneath the ruin of its aged fabric can be seen the small stones that were once its body in small piles like cookie crumbs with the taste of earth.

Remnants of foliage kiss a musty sweetness onto its roughened cheeks and the memories of vines cover its great stone walls like the wrinkles on a face furrowed with wisdom.

A procession of black-clad voices can be heard echoing between the clouds and its form.

A vacant space where there was once a window calls out and an abbey bell walks a narrow path to ears humbled by an allegiance to melancholy.

The heavens are sad and invite you to their contemplations...

(The exhibit of war damage in Nagaoka, Japan is not longer on display on Nagaoka's main street but remains on display in a war-damage museum in the downtown area -- Nov. 30, 2009)

Places throughout the world saw massive death and damage in what became "total war." This is -- and will be -- the result of appeasing authoritarian states. The easy analysis is to point to the U.S. for bombing innocent civilians in the instance depicted here. A more sober appraisal will ask why we continue to appease dictatorships and authoritarian governments in the assumption that we are "preventing" things such as this from happening when in fact this is the natural result of letting thugs have their way with their own people and free societies around them.

Nagaoka, Japan, as depicted in a painting on a poster displayed in downtown Nagaoka. Nagaoka was bombed by the United States at the beginning of August just before the end of World War II. Like many places throughout the world at the time, thousands of civilians were killed. The killers were all parties involved but the war began due to the rise and consolidation of power by authoritarian cliques in Japan, Germany, and Italy...just so ya know (!).

It should be noted that Admiral Yamamoto was personally opposed to the attack on Pearl Harbor (he had earlier attended Harvard University), yet obediently carried out his orders. As Nagaoka, Japan's most famous son he his honored, but locals don't seem to get the irony of mourning the civilians killed in their city while similtaneously honoring a major player in the events of the time. Like most people, they are opposed to war like a vegetarian who doesn't eat meat between meals (I forgot who said that).
